Gresham Cooling Shelter to Continue Opening Evenings Through Sunday

The National Weather Service expects temperatures to remain in the 90s through the weekend, peaking Sunday with highs near 100.

Multnomah County will continue to open a cooling shelter at its East County building, located at 600 NE 8th St., in Gresham. Thursday and Friday, July 26-27, the shelter will be open from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, July 28-29, the shelter will open from 4 to 9 p.m.

For folks enjoying the outdoors this weekend and those who might hit the streets for the Run for Beer or taste the more than 80 craft brews at the Oregon Brewers Festival, health officials want to remind visitors that drinking too much alcohol can cause dehydration, especially on hot summer afternoons.

"Alcohol and heat can be a dangerous combination, and it's one of the most common ways people end up in the emergency room on hot days," said Brendon Haggerty, who monitors heat-related health risks for Multnomah County Environmental Health Services. "Festival goers enjoying events this weekend should be sure to drink water, stay in the shade, and keep an eye out for signs of heat illness."
